About the brand

The Martha Ellen philosophy is to make beautiful, quality clothes that merge tradition and culture with contemporary, wearable designs.

Martha Ellen designs are:

Handmade from start to finish, each piece is created with Tenun Ikat, sourced or custom-ordered directly from weavers. Designs are tailored to accentuate the natural characteristics of the fabric and flatter women of all sizes.

Designed for Living

Martha Ellen challenges the perception of Tenun Ikat as a formal, once-a-year fabric by producing modern, wearable designs. It’s about beautifully crafted pieces that distill years of heritage but can be worn and enjoyed everyday and for different occasions. These are clothes for women with busy lives - be they bankers, actresses or mothers - who are independent thinkers, appreciate quality and cherish something special.

Produced with the customer in mind

Martha Ellen makes unique designs for unique people – clothes that show off your individual taste and make you feel amazing, no matter what your height or shape. The ready-to-wear collection is available in UK sizes 6-18 or XXS-XXL. The fit has been standardized to cater to a wide range of body types. Martha also works with clients on custom, made-to-order and made-to-measure designs for all occasions.

“The first time I met Martha was at the Brightspot market, and I was looking for a chic Tenun blazer. I found one that I've been looking for between her collection and straight away bought it. Since then, Martha has been making me chic and unique clothes that really represent who I am. I love the Tenun even more and her simple yet sophisticated design has become part of me very well. I'm very lucky to have her as my friend, fashion consultant and also designer.”

Rooted in communities

By preserving and promoting weaving and hand sewing, the Martha Ellen approach aims to enrich the lives of the production team as well as customers. Producing genuine Tenun Ikat fabric, which includes dying, binding and motif design,is a complex and time-consuming process that involves whole families and binds communities together. Martha Ellen designs celebrate this culture, preserve the local craft and make Tenun Ikat more accessible to the international market.

Designer Story

In 2009, Martha left her advertising job in London to create her own fashion brand. After studying at Central Saint Martins in London and ESMOD in Jakarta, she worked with established Indonesian designers including Ali Charisma and Jeffry Tan. A trip to Bali inspired Martha to create her own range of ready to wear womenswear using the
traditional Tenun Ikat fabric. She launched her first collection in November 2011 at Brightspot market, a curated pop-up market for new designers in Jakarta.

Since then, the label has been stocked at a range of leading retailers in Indonesia. As the brand matured, Martha showed at Indonesia Fashion Week in 2013 and opened her own boutique in South Jakarta to give her clients a unique shopping experience. Now, in 2017, she continues to make made-to-order pieces from the collection, as well as expanding the ready-to-wear offering into both local and international markets.
